My western hognose snake won't eat. Why is he refusing food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My western hognose snake was mostly happy all the time, very social. One day i tried to feed him and he declined that meal.I Got a little concerned and made sure his frozen mouse was nice and warm, it was. I waited until the next day and tried to feed him a different mouse.(knowing not to feed an old mouse) He hasn’t shed in almost a couple months.(i think that means he’s done shedding?i don’t really know) I’m hoping to find a definite answer as to why he won’t eat, it’s now been two weeks.

Check the temps in the enclosure. Low temps can affect appetite in reptiles. You can also try "scenting" prey with a tiny bit of water from canned tuna or salmon. make sure mice are no bigger than the diameter of his head. If he will allow, look in and around his mouth for signs of injury or infection, if you see anything suspicious, have him seen by your veterinarian.
