Why isn't my dog's tail wound healing after being shut in a door?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed | 11 years old | 50 lbs

I took my dog to the vet because my mom shut her tail in the door the vet shaved and cleaned it and started her on antibiotics, pain meds, and anti inflammatory. I've been changing the dressing as told. It doesn't seem to be healing.

It can take a long time for a wound on the end of the tail to heal, and sometimes wounds in this area never heal right due to trauma and lack of blood supply. I would recommend rechecking with your vet - sometimes amputating the tip of the tail is necessary to get a wound to heal.
