My dog's paw wound is weeping post-surgery. How to clean and dress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Alaskan Malamute | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 108 lbs

Hi, my boy Malamute had a small lump removed from the side of his paw, benign thank goodness! It was 2 weeks ago and stitches have dissolved, but it is still weeping, I got more antibiotics from the vet and I change the dressing twice a day but don't know if I should be cleaning/washing it before applying a new dressing or leave it to dry, If so what do you advise to wash it with? Looks sore and not sure if I should leave dressing on for longer without changing it? Thanks.

I'm not sure if you tried to attach a picture or not, but I do not see a picture. Be sure that the dressing stays clean and dry on the outside. If Zander gets it wet on the outside, it can allow bacteria to come through the bandage to the wound. If you are changing the dressing twice daily, then I would not anticipate any reason that it would need cleaning. In general, it is better to change a bandage more often. However, if it appears sore, then I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it to make sure there aren't any changes that need to be made to your bandaging process. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
