My dog is limping, shivering, and screaming. Is it arthritis?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 11 years and 9 months old

She has all of sudden started limping. In addition to limping she also shivers and screams (only for a short duration when she tries to move). As per our obervations she cannot move her hing left leg or put too much weight on it. When she stands up the leg is shivering and is not stable. She pants a bit but not excessively or anything. When I took her on a walk yesterday at first she did scream and could not put wait on it but was fine later. She has suffered from arthritis before this.

It sounds like poor Laika is in a lot of pain. It could be that her arthritis has flared up, but there could be something else wrong such as a strained or torn ligament. Because she sounds so painful, the best thing to do is have her seen by a vet right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain, and can treat her for it. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. My advice is to take her into a vet now. Good luck!

Poor Luna! Because she is 8 or 9, my first thought is that she may be suffering from arthritis. That would cause her pain, and from your description, it sounds like she is painful. It could also be that she injured herself. Arthritis is common in older dogs. I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose if she is suffering from arthritis, and can give her some pain meds for it. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. I also recommend giving her glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjunction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from her symptoms. Yes, it could be arthritis. Sometimes though cold can affect a formally broken bone. It's weird, but I broke my humerus about 12 years ago and sometimes when it's really cold, the arm hurts. That could be happening to Sophee. Until you get her into a vet, keep her as warm as possible. Take her out briefly to potty, and bring her right back in when she's done. Please do not give her any human pain medication, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

This could be due to knee pain or hip pain. Restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. If she doesn't improve or if she worsens in the next 48 hours, have her physically examined by your veterinarian. X-rays of the limb may be indicated after the exam. Do not medicate her without the advice of your veterinarian.

I recommend having Holly seen by a vet to determine where her pain is coming from. Due to her breed and your described pain symptoms, I'm concerned that she may have a back injury such as IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), in which case she should be put on anti-inflammatory and pain medications right away to control any swelling that might be occurring around her spinal cord. Do not give her any medication, as there is nothing safe over-the-counter for dogs and anything you give her could interfere with the recommended treatment at the vet. In the meantime, the most important thing is to minimize her activity and keep her quiet. Don't let her jump on/off furniture, take her outside only briefly to go potty then right back in, carry her up/down stairs, etc. Hope this helps and hope she feels better soon!

Poor Lily! I agree that she sounds very uncomfortable. No, arthritis pain does not typically come on suddenly like this - it's usually quite gradual. Your description sounds more consistent with back pain due to a "slipped" or herniated disc, or some other type of acute injury. I do not recommend giving human aspirin to dogs, as it isn't terribly effective and can cause some serious side effects such as stomach ulcers and intestinal bleeding. In addition, it will severely limit your veterinarian's ability to treat her, because our safer and more effective pain medications for dogs cannot be given for several days after even a single dose of aspirin. I understand that she's frightened of vet visits, but I'm afraid it really sounds like this is what she needs. Since she sounds quite painful, it would be best to take her to an emergency clinic tonight or tomorrow to be seen rather than waiting until Monday. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bruno. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He may need x-rays of his rear legs. I am worried that he may have arthritis or another joint condition that is contributing to his pain. The skin can be assessed at the same appointment. However, it is probably a separate issue from the mobility problems. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Hello, while I am glad you have been using a good joint supplement, it sounds like your girl needs some more serious pain medication for her osteoarthritis. There are many to choose from, and they can literally give an aging pet a new lease on life. I have literally seen crippled dogs that owners wanted to euthanize become happy, active pets. My dog began to shake and have trouble walking suddenly this morning. She still has her appetite but appears to be highly nervous and partially uncomfortable. What could this be?
I'm not sure how old Daisy is, but she could be suffering from arthritis, may have degenerative joint disease, or could have injured herself. It is concerning that she is having trouble walking, and that indicates she could be in a lot of pain. Given those symptoms, I feel it's best to have her seen by a vet today. The vet can diagnose what is causing her trouble walking, and can treat it while also giving her some pain medications. Arthritis is common in older dogs, so it is possible that Lazlie is suffering from it. An injury is also possible, and without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

It is difficult to say for sure, but by your description, it sounds like Nala may be in pain. I recommend having her checked out by a veterinarian as soon as possible either at an emergency clinic or by finding a veterinarian on call. Good luck.
