My cat had fever, vomiting, diarrhea. What was it? When can he play?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 7 months and 17 days old | 8 lbs

A week &1/2 ago my 7mo cat vomited his food and stopped eating. After a day and a half of not eating mixed with vomiting bile, I took him to the vet. He had a fever of 105.6F. Blood panel showed WBC count at 0.4 and liver was borderline failing. After a couple of days of fluids and antibiotics he was starting to act normal again, but started having red diarrhea (lasted 2-3 days). The vet did 2 parvo tests, both negative. What else could it have been? When can he play with my other cats again?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Harley! It could have been a severe viral infection (we don't have tests for many viruses), a toxin or secondary fatty liver from being sick and not eating. If he is 100% normal I would let him play with other cats 2 weeks AFTER he became normal. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!
