My dog's popped cyst: Should I cover the wound or leave it alone?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old | 75 lbs

My dog had a big pimple/zit/cyst on his back. It popped and the remaining pus was squeezed out. He now had a small hole/wound where the growth was. The bleeding is very minimal. Shoukd I put gauze on it and leave it on overnight? Or should I leave it alone, I’m scared it might get infected or worse.

You can leave it open like this, it will likely heal on its own. However, over time it will probably fill again, if it was a cyst. If this happens you may have to have it removed. Do not put ointment on it, generally leave it alone. It may be a good idea to cut away the hair around it to avoid hair to get into the wound.

    I don't recommend poppong the cyst as it could become infected. Have him examined by a vet. Your vet can drain the cyst, if needed, but it may need to be removed so it doesn't continue to fill back up.

So this could be a continuing problem when it heals, fills up again, and then opens. While the best thing to do is have it removed, you can hold off to see if it fills up again. Clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

It looks like a cyst has ruptured. I don't think it needs stitches. It should heal OK, however, the cyst may form again. If that happens, you should probably have it surgically removed before it ruptures again. Sebaceous cyst will often fill with thick material and often you are able to pop or express the material from the cyst. As long as it is not painful, inflamed, or has bloody or purulent discharge there's no need to take Brennan immediately to the vet. The cyst will likely fill up again, they usually will not completely go away without surgical removal of the entire system lining. But as long as it's not bothering him and is not becoming infected, often times monitoring is all you need to do. I hope this answers your question, thank you for using Boop by Petco.

You've cleaned Chulo's cyst already, you don't need to clean it daily. That will interrupt the healing process. Leave it be for now. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps.

I have a pup that had mass cell cancer removed, and the vet took out the stitches leaving a gaping hole. She put my dog on antibiotics and gave me Trixie flush to put in the hole. She said it will heal fine. I'm worried. Do you agree is okay to leave
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. From the pictures, it does appear that this is a sizable hole. Unfortunately, when dealing with cancer cells, anytime a cancerous mass is removed this is a possible complication. Flushing the area may help this heal faster or this may not heal well at all due to the cancerous nature of the area. I would say that if this is not looking like it is developing healthy tissue within a week of flushing and caring for the open wound, I would recommend having this closed with stitches again. I would have the veterinarian check the wound every 3 days to monitor it's progression. This area is hard to bandage and most likely a bandage would not stay in place in this area. I would leave this exposed to the air so it heals better. When she goes to sleep at night, I would put a shirt around her or a pair of boxer shorts to keep it protected. I hope this helps! Things like this can be an enlarged pore that has accumulated a wax ball or sometimes a cyst that has dried up and the body has blocked off. Generally these pets will be fine. Wash the area gently with soap and rinse it well. Gently pat it dry. Make sure Stella does not lick at it as this can make it inflamed and prone to infection. Look at it daily for any signs of redness, swelling or discharge. If these are seen, take her to the veterinarian. Generally these lesions will fill in and don’t require you to apply any treatment. They may also reappear at a later date. If anything looks suspicious, have it checked out. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My dog had a small wart burned off by vet a week ago. The scab fell off and now he has a dime sized open wound. How can I care for this? Or should I just leave it alone and observe? Thanks!
I would recommend just leaving this alone and making sure he is not able to lick this area. It does not appear infected to me based on the photo, however if you are noticing redness or swelling around the wound or if there is discharge you should see a veterinarian. I would definitely recommend checking in with your veterinarian when they are open to make sure there is nothing else they would recommend for Reese.

My cat's sebaceous cyst just burst and a cheesy like glop came out. My vet said this would happen but I don't remember what I should do to care for it now that it's drained and she has a hole in her skin. No blood or pain isassociated
You can apply a warm and damp washcloth to the area, which will help the area continue to drain. Gently trim back Hocus's fur, and clean the area with antiseptic soap. I would not put any antibiotic cream on it. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. I would keep an Ecollar on Hocus to keep her from licking at it, and keep her indoors if she is allowed outside. Monitor the hole for signs of infection, which include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus. Should you see any of those signs, I would take her into the vet as she will need antibiotics to treat the infection.

Trust your vet. As long as the mass does not grow or cause a problem, it is better to leave it alone. Should it start to grow or burst or ooze or get infected, it can be surgically drained or removed.

I would leave it. If you pop it, it can introduce infection into the area and make it worse. I would clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap, and then monitor it. If it gets larger and/or does go away in a couple of days, then I would have Choc seen by a vet. I hope this helps!
