My blind senior dog with glaucoma is agitated. Can I give Ativan?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 15 years and 9 months old | 61 lbs

Our 16 year old lab mix has been treated for glaucoma for over 6 months but today was a marked change. She can't see at all---runs into everything just walks room to room. We give her Latanoprost Opthlalmic Q12 hrs. Yesterday at the vet her pressures read 11 (bad eye) 8 (bad). At the beginning they had been in the 40's, She's extremely agitated, can I give her one of my Ativan till we speak to our vet? It's 1mg.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dayzee. I'm sorry to hear about the change she has experienced today. I agree that you need to contact your veterinarian first thing tomorrow. In the meantime, I would not recommend giving her an Ativan tablet. It is in a class of drugs that is occasionally used in dogs. However, that particular medication is not approved for use in dogs. At her age, she could have underlying organ dysfunction and may not metabolize the drug well. In addition, the effects on a dog are not always predictable. Do your best to keep her calm tonight and contact your veterinarian tomorrow. I hope this information helps.
