My puppy has bloody diarrhea, threw up dewormer. Is it parvo?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 7 days old | 1.41 lbs

My puppy has had diarrhea since last night and it got better earlier (more solid) but then got much worse. She threw up the dewormer meds the vet gave her and now has bloody diarrhea.

Oh goodness. I am so sorry to hear that Bambi is so sick. I am very concerned about parvovirus with the symptoms that you describe. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. At 1.4 pounds she can become severely dehydrated very quickly. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be going on from what it sound like. Parvovirus is a severe gastroenteritis that affect puppies more often. This is a viral infection so there is no direct treatment for the virus so the treatment per se is directed at treating secondary bacterial infections and mostly helping with the clinical symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence. This warrants ideally hospitalization with some cases being able to be managed with outpatient care depending on its severity. I recommend that you follow up with a veterinarian who can institute therapy for Nani as soon as possible. The quicker this condition gets treated the better the outcome tends to be. Good luck! Hoping for a quick recovery!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Parvovirus is very serious and very often animals require intensive intervention including IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, sometimes antibiotics. Parvovirus also does often have a phase where they look better, and then get much sicker again before they completely recover. I recommend you continue with aggressive treatment for Blake, and hopefully he will pull through. Best of luck with Blake, I hope he feels better soon!
