My dog is limping and her leg hurts. Could it be a broken bone?

Honestly, it could be either. Without seeing Lola in person and doing x-rays, I can't say for certain if her leg is broken or just hurt. Limping is a sign of pain in dogs, so if she is limping everywhere, she is in a lot of pain. I'd take her into a vet immediately to get checked out, it would be wrong to leave her in this condition. It's not likely to be broken if she is using that leg but if she seems to be in pain when using the leg you should take her to the vet in order to get it checked, the vet will do a physical exam and will usually be able to tell you right away if he suspects a fracture or not.

To diagnose a sprain or fracture, your dog will need to be physically examined by your veterinarian. X-rays can diagnose a fracture. Since she is exhibiting signs of pain, she likely require some pain medication and anti inflammatories to provide relief.

If the limp is mild than you could restrict his exercise to rest him for a few days and see if that helps. If he seems to be in a lot of pain or the limp is severe than he should be examined by a vet right away. Your vet can take an x-ray to determine if there is a fracture. He may also need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications to help relieve any discomfort and swelling.

She may have torn her cruciate ligament, have a problem with her knee cap, have a fracture, etc. Since she seems to be in pain, you should take her to your vet today for an orthopedic examination. Based off the radiograph, it looks like her fibula, the smaller bone in her lower leg, may be fractured. It is difficult to know for sure without an orthogonal view, but that may be the reason for her limping. I recommend restricting her activity to cage rest and leash walks only, do not let her run or play for at least 4 weeks to allow time for the bone to heal. I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian who can perform bloodwork and see if it is safe to prescribe her anti-inflammatory pain medications to help her feel more comfortable. NEVER give human pain medications to dogs as they can be markedly toxic. I hope this is helpful!

It sounds like Trixie is in pain. Her fall may have caused her to fracture a bone, damage a joint or ligament, or caused some muscle damage. While joint/muscle damage may resolve on its own, a fracture may require stabilization. Without it, the bone may heal in a deformed way and even alter the growth of the leg in the future. A vet will be able to perform x-rays to see if there is a fracture and offer you treatment options - likely a splint, cast, or surgery to chose from. X-rays are usually not very expensive and will give an answer regarding the cause of the limping. They will also be able to prescribe the appropriate pain medication that is safe for dog. In the meantime, I recommend keeping Trixie as quiet and calm as possible to prevent further trauma.

I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Poor Lily! There are many different possibilities in this case. It may be that she has simply bruised herself or damaged a muscle or ligament. However she may have a more serious injury such as a fracture or ligament rupture. If she seems to be comfortable and nothing looks out of place you could let her rest 24 hours then if she is no better or getting worse head to the vet.
