My dog won't eat for a day and is whining. When should I see a vet?

Hi and thank you for using Boop by Petco! I am sorry that Bear has not been eating. Since it has been more than a day that Bear has not eaten, I recommend taking him to the vet. It could be anything from not liking his original food, to an upset stomach, to something more serious like pancreatitis, a foreign object, oral pain etc. Your vet can perform a full physical exam and decide if additional diagnostics are warranted at that time (blood work, fecal testing, radiographs). If Bear has any vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy- I would recommend taking Bear in sooner to the vet.

Vomiting can have many causes in puppies- parasitic or viral infections, obstructions, or dietary indiscretion or eating something out of the ordinary among other causes. I would recommend restrict feeding Max for the next 8 hours or so (he can have water). If he continues to vomit or vomits again after his fast, then I would have him seen by a veterinarian. Hello, sorry to hear about Max. If max has vomited more than 4 times in one day or has developed Frank blood diarrhea, or if he is severely lethargic then he should be seen tonight as he could be very dehydrated. If he is otherwise stable and has some lethargy but is still acting somewhat like his normal self, then he can likely wait until the morning.

HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! She is very cute! I think if she is sleepy a lot and that is abnormal and it has been 2 days that she should see a Veterinarian for a physical exam. Causes of not eating are:intestinal parasites, foreign body ingestion, viral infections, toxin ingestion or other more regional diseases. I wouldn't want her to go much longer without eating. It is hard to state exactly what to do to make Max feel better. He really needs a veterinarian to perform a physical examination on him and some diagnostics. If there is an emergency veterinarian in your area I would recommend bringing him there. I would ask neighbors to see if there is someone open right now. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Max. Poor boy. He does sound pretty sick, you can try a home remedy. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. If there isn't an ER clinic in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. I hope this helps!

It sounds as Max is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Since last night was Halloween, think about if there's anything she could have eaten that she shouldn't have and take her to the vet ASAP if you realize your chocolate stash or your entire pan of bacon wrapped something or anothers from the potluck is missing. If you can't think of anything she ate, it's generally ok to wait 24 hours to see if she get back on her food naturally. Sometimes something goes wrong in the gut and we don't know why but it resolves quickly. If she's not back to normal in 24 hours, or has any vomiting or diarrhea in the mean time, she needs to go to her vet for evaluation and supportive care.
