My 3-month-old puppy is sore after rabies shot. How to ease pain?

Hello, My three month old puppy just got her Rabies shot today, and she is really sore. Is there anything that I can give her to ease her pain?

Poor Brandi! You can try putting a cold compress on the spot where she received her vaccine to see if that helps. Leave it on for five minutes at a time a couple of times during the day. If you are concerned she is very painful, I would take her back into the vet for some pain medications. Unfortunately many human pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given, and it's illegal for me to prescribe any drugs for her without seeing her in person. Good luck!

You can see some pain where the vaccines were given. Do not give Penelope any human pain relievers, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can try putting a cold compress on the area where she got her vaccines to see if that helps. She should be back to normal within 24 hours, but if she isn't, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Soreness after vaccines is very common. I would use a cold compress on the areas where she got the vaccines for about 10 minutes at a time every few hours. I would also let her rest and not run around. She should be more comfortable by morning. If not, contact your vet for some anti-inflammatories. Please do not give anything over the counter as most things are not safe for dogs. Good luck and kisses to Lola!

Oh no. Poor guy. It looks like he is having a superficial pyoderma ("hot spot") reaction to his skin following the injection, and maybe even a bit of cellulitis. You will need to unfortunately take Lucky back to the vet to get this treated with oral antibiotics, and also oral pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication. The topicals aren't going to be enough to help this resolve. You can clean the area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to keep it clean. You should definitely also keep the e-collar on him until this has resolved or at least until it is no longer bothering him. I am sorry your fur baby had such a bad reaction and hope that this can be avoided in the future. Best wishes and take care!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Soreness and lethargy are common side effects from a vaccine. They are not reactions. I would try applying a cold compress over the site for 10-15 minutes every 6-8 hours as needed. If she won’t let you, just leave her alone. It should pass in about 24 hours. Please do not give any over the counter medications as there isn’t anything safe to give pets. Good luck and kisses to Mia!

Hi and thank you for using Boop by Petco! Bruno is such a cute pup! I am sorry he is painful. The pain is likely from the vaccine if you gave it in-between his shoulder blades. I would recommend calling your regular veterinarian for an anti-inflammatory medication or you can wait a day and see if the pain subsides. I would not give any over the counter human medication as it could have adverse side effects. Good luck and I hope bruno feels better!

My puppy had a shot today and has pain around the injection site, enough to make her Yelp loudly. What can I do to help her?
You can apply an ice pack to the area of the injection site for today (if your vet is closed). A bag of frozen peas works well for this as it can conform to the area. Be sure to wrap the ice pack/frozen peas in a thin towel or cloth so it isn't directly touching the skin. You can leave it on for 10-15 minutes and reapply every few hours. If she is still painful tomorrow call your vet and they can decide if she needs some prescription pain medication. Signs that she may need to see a vet right away (an emergency vet) would include severe lethargy, vomiting, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, or hives.

My toy poodle just came back from getting his shots and he’s in a lot of pain even just moving hurts him what can I do to help him
Sometimes vccinations (any injection, for that matter) can be a bit sore for a day or two. If Nano is very painful, take a few ice cubes, put them in a plastic bag, wrap a towel around the bag and cool the injection site for 5 minutes, then stop. Do this a couple of times today (3-4 times) and the pain and potential swelling should be gone by tonight oor at the latest tomorrow morning.

My dog Arlo, a 16 month old Chihuahua, hasn’t been active really at all today and any time he jumps on the couch or gets held he yelps. He had his rabies shot yesterday if that matters. I just don’t like seeing him hurting if there is anyway to help!
Arlo might have a little pain at his injection site, or it’s possible that he has some back or neck pain. If you’re not sure exactly where he’s painful I’d recommend making an appointment to see your vet. If you think it’s the injection site you could apply a warm compress and contact your vet to get a prescription a safe pain medication.

Poor little Frank. Getting vaccines can be painful. Please do not give him any human pain medications. Many are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Hi there. Yes, it's normal for dogs to be sore and lay around for a day or two after getting vaccinations - just like human kids! There is nothing over-the-counter that is safe to give dogs for pain, but you could call your veterinarian in the morning to ask about prescribing an anti-inflammatory med for her for a few days if she still seems pretty sore. For tonight, I would recommend just leaving her alone to rest. Most dogs are back to normal within a few days :)
