My senior cat is throwing up. How can I help her at home affordably?

My 12 year old Calico cat has been throwing up very frequently and I don’t know why. I know it says I should go to a clinic if she is throwing up for no reason, but I just can’t afford that. I was hoping I could get some help in home remedies that could make my cat feel better and stop puking.

You can change her food to a hypoallergenic or sensitive stomach formula such as science diet I/D. These are very bland and easy to digest. You can also get probiotics for cats to add to the food to help Sometimes vomiting can be from an infection, cancer or inflammatory bowel. Your vet can start testing for these thing if the above doesn’t help

    Unfortunately, those are all very vague symptoms and signs that Tia is not feeling well and needs medical care. Vomiting and refusing to eat are very serious concerns in a cat, and can be caused by a wide range of things such as illness, viral diseases, parasites, infections and more, and needs a vet exam to narrow down the causes and find the correct treatment. You can try to encourage eating by making her food smelly by warming it up or adding a little low-sodium broth, however if she is not able to keep anything down or is completely acting ill, she needs care ASAP. Poor kitties! It could be one of them has a GI illness or this vomiting could be related to a medical disease such as kidney failure, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. I recommend withholding food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in their normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, they vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, they will need to see a vet right away. Some causes for intermittent vomiting in a cat her age include a food allergy, IBD, issues with her liver/gallbladder or even intestinal cancer. With those conditions the normal blood tests can all be normal. She may need an ultrasound of her belly to see exactly what is causing her vomiting.

It is not normal for a cat to vomit that frequently, so your cat may have inflammatory bowel disease or another type of chronic gastrointestinal disease. Since it has been going on for so, a diet change may not be enough at this point. The ideal situation would be to have your veterinarian do some testing to determine what is causing the vomiting. If that is not an option, then I would discuss treatment options with your veterinarian. There are a number of medications that may be able to resolve the vomiting. Good luck! The chronic vomiting could be caused by a food allergy so you could try them on a hypoallergenic diet. You could try z/d or d/d but they are prescription diets so it would need to be prescribed by your vet. You could also try a sensitive stomach diet, like Hill's Sensitive stomach which you could find at a pet store. You could also add a probiotic to their diet, like Fortiflora or Proviable.

Yes, I would be worried. Vomiting in elderly cats can be a sign of a medical illness such as kidney failure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or even cancer. I'd take her into a vet today for a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis. Based on the results of the tests, the vet can discuss treatment options. I hope this helps.

Changing food frequently can cause gastric upset with vomiting and diarrhea so you should pick a high quality food and stick with it. You could try a diet specifically made for gastrointestinal problems and see if that helps. The first test that should be done is a fecal test to make sure she doesn't have a parasite causing her problem. If that is normal than your vet can run blood-work to look for other cause. The cost really depends on the vet and your location. You could call some local vets and get an estimate for an exam, fecal test, and routine blood-work. You could also add a probiotic to her food, like Fortiflora or Proviable and see if that helps.

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. With gastrointestinal disease, sometimes the intestines are just unable to absorb nutrients regardless of the type of food you feed. So, it is important to feed Elvis whatever he will eat. There are no natural remedies, as there is no quick medical fixes, either. Oral steroids often help for a while, but then other medications are often needed. You can try some of the cat foods labeled as sensitive stomach or sensitive skin. The best ones are made by Science Diet & Royal Canin. I would also try him on a good probiotic, like Purina's FortiFlora. It really does seem to help some of these cats with GI issues. I'm sorry this is going on with Precious but she needs to see a vet. The most common issues we see with older cats are: 1. diabetes 2. kidney disease/failure 3. hyperthyroidism Any of those can cause her symptoms and all are treatable (to an extent). All can be ruled out with simple blood testing. The best one she could have is hyperthyroidism - it is not expensive to diagnose or treat. Of course it may not be any of those and she could have something else going on entirely. First step is you need to know what the diagnosis is. I don't know what prices are in your area but an exam and bloodwork is probably right around $200. All you can do is call around for prices and see what you can work out. Some humane societies these days have low cost services so maybe check with them.

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Episodes of acute vomiting like these can be related to pancreatitis, bile ducts and gall bladder infection, gastritis, food indiscretion and more. It would be worth to do a blood test to check Louie's pancreas and liver function. If the test for pancreas is positive, Louie's would definitely benefit from low fat diet.

I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Laundry. There are a number of anti-nausea medications that can be helpful for Laundry. And if your veterinarian has not recently checked his blood work (including a thyroid level) and blood pressure, I would certainly recheck those values to make sure that they are normal. Then, you can discuss the best anti-nausea medication with your veterinarian to help Laundry feel better. They will not want to do a teeth cleaning on him if he is not feeling well, so be sure to have them evaluate Laundry and solve this problem first. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
