How do I stop my Yorkie from barking constantly when left alone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 8 lbs

I have a 1 1/2 year old yorkie. He was found abandoned in a back yard for a lenghty time to where he had only bark, grass,an dirt to eat. we rescued chewie about 9 months ago. Chewie is healthy now but our problem is when he is alone he non stop barks and bothers the neighbors to no bitter end. Chewie is well loved but we are trapped as his prisoners to where we can't go no where with out him or have to rely on a sitter. What can we do to stop this?

You need to acclimate Chewie gradually to your not being at home. Start by going to the door with a treat. Open the door and step outside, giving him the treat. Come back in. Repeat this a few times; then go out, treat, and shut the door for a second or two. Return and, if he's been quiet, praise and treat. Very gradually increase the time you are outdoors, and the distance from the house you go. Get him a Kong toy that you can fill with peanut butter (freeze overnight to make it last longer). Give that to him and leave, but be sure to return before he has finished his goodie. You should find that he is comfortable by himself for longer and longer periods. Good luck with this!
