Dog bit on nose, not bleeding. What to do until vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 80 lbs

My dog was bit in the nose by another dog this afternoon. I will not be able to get to the vet until tomorrow. It is a cut on the surface and is not bleeding. What can I do to help keep it clean until tomorrow?

Gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. I would not point any antibiotic ointment on it because Merlin will just lick it off. You can try to put a bandage to protect the wound, but make sure it doesn't block his nostrils. You can put an Ecollar on him to keep him from rubbing at his nose, and I will put a link below on how to make one at home. Definitely have him seen by a vet tomorrow, as dog bites frequently become infected and he likely will need antibiotics. Good luck, I hope this helps! http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html

Poor Pipi! I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. I would avoid putting a human ointment on it, they typically contain ingredients that are not safe for dogs to ingest (dogs will lick wounds). To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Boone. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as I am concerned the wound is becoming infected. He will likely need to topically disinfectant and an oral antibiotic to help his skin heal. In the meantime, be sure to keep him from licking the area by placing an E-collar if necessary. Also keep the area clean and dry (no bathing or swimming until it heals). I hope this information helps!
