My hamster has a red, bulging eye. Can I treat it without a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My hamster has a bulging eye in the socked with a little bit of redness above the eye. No vet will take my hamster in my area. Is this something that can be treated at home?

Although a picture of it would help to determine more specifically underlying cause, that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. No need for any special treatment, any vet can do it (and they cannot refuse to take her).Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.
