My dog has a firm lump on his leg. Is it a bug bite or tumor?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 85 lbs

I found a small lump under Drake’s front left leg. It’s about the size of a pea and feels rather firm. We’ve had a lot of wasps in the yard so I’m suspicious it is a bug bite but haven’t been able to find a puncture point. Could it be the start of a fatty tumor? He has a booster shot scheduled for 3/28 for recent vaccines but I want to make sure he doesn’t need to go in any sooner. Is there anything else we need to watch for in the meantime?

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Drake! This lump could be from a bug bite, but it could also be a benign tumor of some sorts like a wart, or it could be a cyst. I would keep an eye on this lump for now. As long as it doesn't get bigger over the days leading up to his appointment on the 28th, it doesn't appear to bother him, there are no behavioral or appetite changes during this time, and/or you don't see any redness, warmth to the touch, or pus from the lump, it's fine to wait until he has his vaccine appointment. Should you observe any of the signs that I mentioned above, then I would take him into the vet sooner. Don't let him scratch at it, as that could make it worse. If he does start scratching at it, making it bleed, then it's bothering him and have him seen by a vet sooner. Good luck, I hope this helps!

So, yes, you should take him to your vet for an exam. It is not an emergency; just try to get him an appointment in the next week or so. I see what you mean about the lump, it is quite big and red. Bruce is a young dog, so the chances of it being malignant are not high at all. I would be wondering if it is from an insect bite, a cyst, or potentially a foreign body in it like a grass seed. I do think it's a good idea to get checked out by a vet tomorrow, but I would not have a digital tumor high on my list as a potential diagnosis. I hope this helps!

Hello my dog has a lump on his leg for about a week now but it's gradually getting really small. And i'm not sure if it's just a bug bite or something serious. Should i wait more to see if it goes away? Because it's still getting really small.
Hi, this does not look like anything to be concerned about. If you wanted to monitor it better, you can clip the hair around the bump to check it for redness, swelling or discharge. It could be a bug bite or maybe a cyst. It's a good sign it is getting smaller. If it grows bigger or changes shape, i would have it looked at by a vet. Good luck, i hope this helps!

Not sure if this is a bug bite or something else that I should be worried about its been there for about a week
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! While this may be a bug bite, the texture appears slightly rough in the photo, so this may be a growth or mass. It is concerning that is has been present for a week, as a bug bite would have likely resolved by now. I recommend having Layla seen by a vet as soon as possible, especially because the area is red and near the mammary chain. Your vet can either remove the lump or take a small sample to determine exactly what it is. I hope this helps and that all is well!

This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors (very unlikely given the age). Candle has a hard to the touch round bump on his left arm (front leg) that he didn’t have yesterday and I’m not sure what it could be I know that my pictures aren’t really up close but I can try for better ones
This could be an allergic reaction, like an insect bite/sting or may be a spot of infection, or a skin tumor. I would recommend keeping a close eye on it for now. Thank you for contacting Pet/Coach with your question about Tucker. This could be a benign growth but without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! As dogs age, they can develop a variety of skin tumors, some benign (non-cancerous) and others cancerous. I do recommend all abnormal growths be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if they are an issue or not. Many of these can be diagnosed with an analysis of a needle sample. Good luck!

This morning I found a small bump on the inside of my dogs leg. He's a 2 year old pitbull. The bump is a little smaller than the size of a dime, I'm just worried it might be a small tumor.
I would recommend that you have this new little bump checked out by a vet. It could be a tumor, but it could also be an insect bite reaction, infection, allergies, clotting disorder, among a few others. If you see additional spots like this show up soon, then Jagger should see a vet immediately. If this spot stays the same and others do not appear, then it could wait until your vet is next open.

Can someone please tell me what this is?! I just found it under my dogs back leg and im terrified. Hes very hard to get to a vet.
First of all, don't be terrified of this lesion! I agree that it's quite prominent, but it could be due to any number of issues. Some possibilities include a benign cyst, skin tag, or a benign or malignant mass. The only way to differentiate between these conditions is with some diagnostic testing. I understand that it's difficult to get an appointment with a vet right away, but the good news is that this isn't an emergency. It will be okay if you have to wait a week or two to see a vet with Bullet. Your vet will need to perform a physical exam and a cytology, which uses a needle to draw a few cells from this lesion for microscopic analysis. Further testing may be recommended, depending on what they see, or they may recommend surgical removal or monitoring of this lesion. Until your appointment, continue to keep a close eye on this area for any sudden growth, ulceration, or discharge. I've included an article below about cytology.
