My indoor cats have recurring green/brown eye discharge. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 17 years and 4 months old | 8 lbs

-4 of my cats over the last couple of weeks started having a clear liquid weep from their eyes and turn a green/brown color when it dries. They eventually have recovered, but it has come back again. They are indoor cats, so I am not sure what could have caused it or what it is; any advice?

This could be caused by either allergies or a virus that is affecting all the cats. If the problem is self resolving and not causing any other issues (like anorexia or lethargy) then I would not worry about it too much. If, however, it seems like your cats are ill, not wanting to eat, etc, then you should consider taking them to the vet to be checked out. I hope this helps.
