My dog scraped his nose. How can I help and what should I watch for?

Ouch, poor Charlie! I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see swelling, it's warm to the touch, or there is pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Aww, poor Benson! I don't think you need to be worried. Wash the scratch with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. My dog opened up his nose and as he plays around o am scared that he will open it up further. Is there anything I can put to heal it faster?
This is a difficult place to put anything on, because it will just be licked off. From what I'm seeing in the picture, it is a very minor abrasion, so I would not be to worried about it getting any worse. For now, it's best to just keep the wound clean by wiping it with warm water occasionally. This should be completely healed within the next two weeks.

Ouch, poor Titch! I see what you mean about scratch on his nose, but this likely will not cause him to lose his sense of smell. It's simply a wound on the outer portion of his nose. I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

A superficial scrape will generally heal on it's own. You may gently cleanse the area and then pat it dry. Don't put anything on it as it may encourage Tank to lick the area. The problem with the nose is that the tongue can reach it. Protect the area from rubbing and he may need to wear an elizabethan collar. It should heal in 10-14 days. If it does not, if it gets worse or if it looks deep, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps.

Our 60 lb female got scratched on the nose by another dogs paw (nail). It is bleeding slightly now. She will occasionally lick it. Is there something to put on it to keep it from getting infected.
Since she is able to lick it, it's not advised to put anything on it. The best way to ensure it stays clean and doesn't get infected is to flush the wound with clean water, or saline twice a day for five minutes. Flush the wound with a syringe using a good amount of force. She won't like it, so you'll probably need someone to help hold her. If the wound happens to get swollen, very red and/or is leaking pus, then it would be best to take Molly to a veterinarian for treatment. I hope that helps and all is well with Molly.

My dog was bit in the nose by another dog this afternoon. I will not be able to get to the vet until tomorrow. It is a cut on the surface and is not bleeding. What can I do to help keep it clean until tomorrow?
Gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. I would not point any antibiotic ointment on it because Merlin will just lick it off. You can try to put a bandage to protect the wound, but make sure it doesn't block his nostrils. You can put an Ecollar on him to keep him from rubbing at his nose, and I will put a link below on how to make one at home. Definitely have him seen by a vet tomorrow, as dog bites frequently become infected and he likely will need antibiotics. The very top of my dogs nose is raw and was bleeding the other day. I just want to make sure it's nothing serious. How I can treat it?
Your dog may have rubbed it raw, under the couch or through the fence maybe? I suggest washing the area gently with antibacterial soap and water. Apply a warm washcloth 2-3 times a day for five minutes at a time to help keep it clean and draining. After washing and the compress, dry thoroughly and apply a dab of antibiotic ointment that **does NOT** contain hydrocortisone to the wound. Steroids will slow healing. An OTC triple antibiotic ointment will suffice. Rub it in well and don't leave any excess for your pet to lick off. If it does not show signs of healing or if your dog develops a fever, loses his appetite, starts vomiting or has diarrhea have him seen by your veterinarian right away. Potential cause may include allergies, infection, automimmune disease or even cancer. An e-collar (cone) may be used to prevent rubbing or pawing.

Hello, it does look like she scraped her nose on something. You can clean it with a clean damp cloth and just monitor the area. You can rub a little neosporin on the area if you think she will not lick it. If she does lick it its not a big deal, but then you shouldn't apply any more. If you note any swelling, pain, discharge, or bleeding then have Athena evaluated by her veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi there! Good job cleaning with plain warm water- that is perfect! That wound is fairly superficial and will likely heal just fine on its own. If it's dirty, just a simple wipe with warm water should be sufficient. I generally recommend keeping scratches like that open to air, so no need to use neosporin. If you already put some on her and she licked it off, there should not be any problems though. If you notice any swelling or green discharge, it may be a sign of an infection and time to call your vet. You're very welcome! I hope you have a great day as well!

Sorry to hear Biscuit is in some discomfort. The second picture to me looks like whatever might have happened initially is definitely already on the road to recovery. There is some evidence of swelling and bruising, but it doesn't appear to be badly infected. That being said, if she is uncomfortable enough to be pawing at the area and bothering at it, it still might be painful. She could probably benefit from an anti-inflammatory prescribed by a vet. I would also encourage you to get her an e-collar to prevent her from causing any self-inflicted trauma, thus re-aggravating the lesion. These can be acquired at pet stores, on line, or through a veterinary office. There are also videos online on how to make homemade ones, though many times these are not as effective or will not hold up for very long in young, rambunctious dogs.
