My bearded dragon has yellow gums while shedding. Is this normal?

Thanks for reaching out about Sunny and including pictures. It is difficult to determine by the pictures but it is concerning that this could be a yellow fungus problem. If it is a poor shed, warm water soaks might help the retained shed loosen. A veterinary visit should be scheduled for diagnostic and treatment purposes. When a bearded dragon sheds, you will also always see a change of skin color. It will always be dull, and eventually turn white pre-shed. This is totally normal, so don't worry. Adult beardies will often skip a few meals during shed.

It looks like it could be yellow skin disease. It is becoming more common in beardies and is thought to be caused by a fungus. The antifungal/antibacterial properties of the Flamazine cream (silver sulfadiazine) likely resolved the previous infection. Have Dude examined by your veterinarian or an experienced herp veterinarian for confirmation. A culture and/or biopsy of the area may provide an answer. If it is fungal, topical treatment may work but systemic treatment is usually more effective. Clean and sanitize the cage, furniture and bowls. Monitor and prevent elevated humidity levels which can promote fungal or bacterial overgrowth.

Thank you for posting the picture. I assume you meant gum color? Bearded dragons typically have a pale pink coloring to their oral tissue. The picture looks consistent with what I would expect. Thanks for reaching out about Jabberwocky. Yellow runny feces is not normal, nor a sign of acclimation. A veterinary visit is highly recommended as this bearded dragon appears to be ill. Intestinal parasites or infection, metabolic disorders such as liver (atadenovirus) and other possibilities. Offer water and food through a syringe until you have a veterinary appointment. Yes, it sounds like Lightning could be in the process of shedding. You can increase the amount of food being fed temporarily to get weight back on. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, loose droppings or no droppings. These are all symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. It is near impossible to determine the cause for the weight loss without an exam and diagnostics. It is not uncommon for beardies to stop eating and drinking before, during or for a short period after a shed. This could account for minor weight loss.

It may be stress related. Survey the area around his enclosure for any negative stimuli. Massage his abdomen during the baths to stimulate defecation in case he's a bit constipated. If the behavior persists or if he develops any lethargy or loss of appetite, then have him examined by your herp veterinarian.

It can be normal for a juvenile beardie to shed frequently. Monthly sheds are not unheard of up until one year of age. Soak him daily for 10 minutes in warm water or provide a moist hide to facilitate shedding. If he won't eat greens, you can try mixing in small meal worms, waxworms or hornworms in with greens. Provide a varied diet with proper supplementation of calcium/D3 (3-5x/week) and multivitamins(2-3x/week). As he matures, his appetite and growth will level off.

Hello, The yellow spot could be caused by several things like fungus, bacteria, or a skin mass. The fact that it’s getting smaller is good! Without an exam, I can’t tell you for sure what t is. However, I would be worried about something called “yellow fungus disease.” This is a potentially serious fungal infection common in bearded dragons. Diagnosis can be done by your veterinarian by way of a biopsy and culture of the affected skin. Sometimes, this infection spreads to other organs and can kill the dragon. Since you describe a small lesion, I would expect that if this in fact what’s going on, treatment would have a good chance of working. Therefore, I recommend taking Stalin to see a vet very soon so you can diagnose and treat early for the next chance of success. Good luck!
