My rabbit's eye is red, puffy, and has green gunk. Is it infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 12 days old | 10 lbs

I've notices some green and white gunk in my rabbits one eye. The other one seems just fine. I've had to wash his eye to get it clean and pull some of the gunk off. I want to know if it's a eye infection? If so I will get it treated right away. It's very red and puffy to.

It looks as Buttercup is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in rabbits. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

You need to have Bea seen by a vet first thing in the morning. Any eye problem is considered an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. The vet can diagnose what is going on with his eye, and can treat it. Best of luck.

It looks like your bunny is having some discharge form that eye. You may want to consider applying a warm water compress until you can get him to a veterinarian. Poop that is stuck together may be his cecotrophs. Those are the stool that the bunny should be eating. If he isn't eating them it may be because he isn't feeling well. I would really recommend that he be a veterinarian soon.

It looks like she may have a blocked tear duct or small infection in her tear gland. You could try putting a warm compress over the eye a few times a day and see if that helps reduce the swelling. If the swelling becomes worse or he starts pawing at her eye because of discomfort I would take her in the be checked out.
