Should I cover my puppy's crate to stop tearing things when alone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 months and 13 days old

My new puppy is getting broken in to being in a crate when no one is home. He has puppy pads in there in case he hasnto use the bathroom and of course no one is there to let him out at the moment. When i come home his pads are sometimes ripped up and he only rips them when he’s left alone. To help avoid him tearing up things in his crate should i leave a blanket over his crate so he can’t see when people come and go and he’ll stay calm?

Hello. Gizmo is adorable! You can try covering the crate, but make sure the cover is not too heavy so that he gets too hot, & he can not pull the cover into the crate & chew this up. Make sure he has plenty of chew toys, including the interactive ones that you can put treats in. If people are in & out of the house, perhaps you could enlist someone to walk Gizmo outdoors during the time you are gone. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
