Is it safe if my budgie tears and eats paper from its cage bottom?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male

I usually put a sheet of paper in the bottom of my budgies' cage for them to poop on so i can easily change it every while instead of removing the whole plastic bottom and clean it. But I've come to notice this time that they're tearing the paper apart and possibly eating it, should i be concerned? Should i remove the paper sheet?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. This is fine to use a paper sheet bottom. Budgies are very destructive and will tear anything they can apart. Paper will not hurt your budgie. I've been doing the same with my budgie for the last 3 years and he is absolutely fine. You can continue using the paper towel and at the end of the week clean out the plastic tray.
