Puppy dewormer diarrhea: Will charcoal affect drug absorption?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 16 days old

I am about to give my puppy (14weeks) a deworm tablet, since it probably will cause some diarrhea can I also give him a small part of a activated charcoal or does that decrease the absorption of the drug?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes the deworming pills do cause diarrhea. I wouldn't give the activated charcoal for exactly the reason you indicated. The activated charcoal will likely prevent appropriate absorption of the drug. If diarrhea develops start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. The diarrhea is usually self limiting. I hope this helps and good luck!
