My dog has bloody diarrhea and tacky gums. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 8 years and 7 months old | 85 lbs

My dog has had diarrhea for about a week now. I switched him to chicken and rice and for a day or so it stopped and he didn’t go to the bathroom, but then it started again. Tonight has been bad and he has needed to go out every hour to expel diarrhea, which is all liquid and a tiny bit of red blood. I also think he may be dehydrated now because his gums feel tacky to touch. I have an appointment with my vet this morning in a few hours (11am) but I would like to know if this is an emergency.

I'm sorry Diesel hasn't been doing well at the moment! You absolutely did the right thing by making a vet appointment, and your question as to if this is an emergency is a good one. Given that he is having diarrhea so frequently, you are seeing some blood in it, and there is concern that he is dehydrated, I do think it's best he sees a vet sooner rather than later. Senior dogs are at an increased risk of dehydration, and it's very important to have that treated right way. I do recommend taking Diesel into an ER vet tonight based on his current symptoms. I hope this helps, and good luck!
