Why is my dog whining after spay surgery? Pain or cone discomfort?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 6 months and 7 days old | 36 lbs

Hello! I had a quick question. My pupper was spayed yesterday morning. She seems in decent spirits, but then sometimes starts whining for long periods of time. Incision site is all good, and she is wearing a cone. Do you think it's due to pain? Or discomfort from the cone? She is taking carprofen.

Since she is taking carprofen she should not be in severe pain. She is probably upset because she has to wear the cone. I am afraid you have to bear it out as she will try to "whine you into submission" ie hopes you will take the cone away. The whining should stop within two or three days. If she keeps whining for longer and you think something is wrong with her or if she gets pale mucous membranes, cannot urinate or stops eating you should take her back to the vet for a recheck,
