Dog vomiting/diarrhea on Carprofen. Is it a side effect or flu?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 90 lbs

I think my dog has the stomach flu. He’s an 90 lb lab. He has been taking Carprofen and Gabapentin for some back pain for 3 weeks now. No signs of this medicine potentially bothering him until this week. Had diarrhea this morning and cannot keep anything down (including water). I’m not sure if this is a side affect from the medicine or stomach flu or worse.... Any suggestions

This can be a side effect from the medications. I'm particularly worried about the carprofen. We generally recommend discontinuing the use of Carprofen if they are having vomiting and/or diarrhea. It's best to discontinue the Carprofen and Gabapentin for now until you can contact your veterinarian. They will likely want to examine Harley and possibly prescribe some different medications for now. For more information about vomiting, I recommend you read the article at the link below. https://www.petcoach.co/article/diarrhea-vomiting-in-dogs-when-to-call-your-veterinarian/ If you have further questions or need further clarification, then you may consider having an online consult with one of our vets on Petcoach. This way, you can send unlimited pictures and have a text conversation with a vet. I hope that helps and Harley gets better soon.
