Why is my neutered dog still aggressive and stressed on Trazodone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 months and 2 days old | 26 lbs

Hi , my dog has developed stress and shows mild aggression or hyperactivity and doesn’t respond to my commands . After getting a vet visit , he was neutered and after a month of getting neutered today he’s still looks stressed and shows signs of aggression by lunging onto our family members when we ask him not to do something or to behave . He’s on antidepressants ( trezadon ) for about a month now . My question is , are these the side affects of antidepressants or can you suggest something pl?

It sounds like Bongo has some generalized anxiety issues as well as some aggression issues. You have already done some good things to help get this behavior in control. Neutering will definitely help even though you may not see the effects of immediately. Trazodone is a great drug but works mainly for sedation and not as much to relieve overall anxiety. I would recommend speaking with your vet about starting Bongo on an anti-anxiety medication like Prozac. This may help him as well. I would also recommend working with Bongo on routine/common commands and exercising him frequently. Both of these things will help him feel more relaxed and secure. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
