My cat lost her voice for a month. What could be the serious cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Female | spayed | 13.2 lbs

My cat has completely lost her voice. It's happened before where it goes and comes back in a few days but this has lasted nearly a month and I'm so worried.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Zippy! Possible causes are: viral infections (causing edema or swelling), strain of the vocal chords, infection or abscess or foreign body (needle for example), neurologic disorder, trauma (externally or internally) or a mass on her vocal chords. Since it has been a month I would have her seen by your Vet. I would do blood work, neck X-ray then sedate her to look down her throat. I hope this helps! I wish Zippy the very best!
