My dog coughs and vomits white/brown fluid in morning but acts normal.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 35 lbs

My dog has been waking up each morning and coughing and she repeatedly throws up white mucus. Yesterday it progressed and she threw up a dark brown substance. It is only in the morning. I would have already taken her to the vet, but she is eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom normally. Her demeanor also has not changed. She is still hyper and playful.

Thank you for your question regarding Mia! Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if a dog is coughing and gagging up fluid verses truly vomiting. The coughing you mentioned and white material could be a sign of an upper respiratory infection. The brown material sounds more like vomit though. I'm glad she is still acting normal. If her symptoms persist though, I would recommend that she been seen especially with the weekend coming up. Your veterinarian will do a physical examination and let you know the body system affected and how best to treat Mia. I hope this information helps!
