Why is my dog trying to throw up but nothing comes out? Is it a cough?

Hi, Dove keeps trying to throw up but nothing is coming out. She doesnt have anything stuck in her throat and i gave her a treat and she ate right away. Before she took the treat she was running around. So i have no idea what to do. She doesnt have any toys to get stuck in her throat and is eating and drinking fine. What can i do? Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 4 years and 4 months old | 8 lbs

It sounds like Dove may be coughing instead of attempting to vomit since she was willing and able to eat a treat. Usually dogs who are nauseous are uninterested in food. A cough could be caused by a viral or bacterial infection like kennel cough, allergy related or due to heart disease or pneumonia. I’d recommend having your vet examine Dove to determine whether or not she might be coughing.
