Why is my dog panting with fast heart after eating chocolate granola?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 45 lbs

My dog doesn’t stop panting and has an accelerated heart beat. She ate a small part of a whole grain granola bar that contains small chocolate chips in it two days ago. She had just managed to bite through the plastic and ate a small chunk of it. I don’t think she invested enough chocolate but I am concerned. She weighs about 40 to 50 pounds. She is a smaller husky. She’s mixed with a small breed.

A 40 pound husky would need to ingest quite a bit more chocolate to cause signs of toxicity, and you would see signs of toxicity no more than 12 hours after ingestion. I’d be worried that Suka’s panting and elevated heart rate could be unrelated. Panting can be a sign of pain or anxiety and if it continues you may want to see your veterinarian.
