What food is best for my new puppy and how can I identify her breed?

Hi i just got a female puppy and am concerned on what type of food should i get her i would also like to know how to identify what breed she is sincerely Sofia new Puppy mom. Thanks

Hi Sofia! Congrats on your new puppy! Given that Luna is six months old, she will need to be given a puppy formulated food. Puppies require higher amounts of protein, calories, and calcium than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food will provide that for her. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Once she is 12 months old, she can be transitioned to an adult dog food. As for her breed, unfortunately without seeing a picture of her, I can't say what breed I think she might be. I do recommend a check up with the vet to discuss vaccines, deworming treatments, flea treatments, and spaying her. While there, the vet can help you identify her breed. I'd make an appointment for her this week. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Luna is adorable! Thank you for posting pictures! We generally recommend feeding a puppy food for as long as a dog is growing rapidly. For a very small dog that will only be 6-9 months. For a very large dog that will be more like 18 months. For Luna, that will likely be about year. If Luna is no longer growing quickly and is starting to put on too much weight, then you may need to change her to an adult food sooner, but changing at around a year of age should be the right age for Luna. There are number of great, high quality foods available, all of which are great choices. I like Science Diet and Royal Canin. Look for puppy food until she's 12 months old, then switch her to adult food. As for amount, go off the package recommendations, though you may find she needs less. For more specific recommendations for how much to feed her, talk to your veterinarian, as your vet can advise you based on her current body condition (underweight, ideal weight, overweight) and size. Hello and cute picture! For an 8 week old small breed puppy, I would recommend a small breed puppy food. Royal Canin, Science Diet, Wellness Brand, and Blue Buffalo make good choices, however there are a variety of options out there. I hope you find a food she will really like. The important thing to remember is to have Cali on a puppy food until she is about 9 months to a year old. You can then transition to adult food after that.

Congratulations on your new puppy! At first, I would recommend feeding Lola what she has already been eating at the breeder. Changes in diet have to be done gradually to avoid GI upset, so typically continuing to feed the food they were already on helps to make the transition to the new home easier. In terms of treats, she will be very small, so training treats (small bite sized pieces) would be a great option. Toys are variable depending on which type she enjoys. I would get a couple options and see which type she prefers; just remember not to leave her unsupervised with any toys that have a squeaker, as she may be able to chew it open and eat the squeaker! At first, she won't need to have her teeth brushed, as her adult teeth won't have come in yet (she will still have baby teeth). Getting her used to having your fingers in her mouth and manipulating under her gums will help prepare her for tooth brushing when she is a little older. Congratulations and enjoy!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Browny can eat any dog food diet that is formulated for puppies/growth, and ideally for large-breed dogs. Highly recommended brands include Royal Canin, Purina, and Hills, but other well known companies such as Pedigree are also appropriate. As long as the diet is not vegan, vegetarian or grain free, any puppy dog food diet should be OK. The dog food bag should have a feeding chart on it that outlines how much food Browny should be fed with each meal, based on her weight. I hope this is helpful!

Any brand is fine, I like Purina, Hill's and Royal Canin, You can feed her dry, dry mixed with canned or all canned. Whatever she will eat. Be sure she is feeling ok and doesn't have a fever or abnormal vaginal discharge. If she is refusing to eat she should see a vet to be sure she doesn't have an infection. Especially for large breed puppy is fundamental to provide a complete diet. Good quality commercial diets (Hill's, Royal Canin) are definitively the best choice to make sure you provide all the nutrients Scooby needs. He need a puppy diet and you can continue with it till he is fully grown. Regarding the daily amount, it depends on the brand and type of food you get, you will find the correct dose on the back of the food package. I would probably back down on the actual meat products as they may be rich for Luna's little tummy. Royal Canin makes a canned pate' called Baby Dog and its meant for weaning puppies. It's got all the nutrients she needs. I would use that mixed with some formula soaked puppy kibble. Around 5 weeks old, start to decrease the amount of formula. Luna should be weaned off formula by 7 weeks. She is sooo cute! Thank you for using Pet Coach!

Any food that has an AAFCO certification label on the bag has been tested to be well balanced. And any food that is labeled for puppies is designed to support growth. So I would go with a small breed, puppy dog food with an AAFCO label. I really like the following brands: Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Evo, and Eukanuba. Best wishes taking care of your new puppy. And don't forget that vaccinations usually start around 8 weeks of age, so schedule an appt with your veterinarian soon if you haven't done so already.
