My Turkish Van is prone to obesity. What's her ideal calorie/carb?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Van | Female | spayed | 11 months and 14 days old | 5 lbs

I have a Turkish Van Female named Summer. I got her from a Resue organization when she was 3 months. I read that they reach maturity at3 yrs and are prone to over weight. I feed wt food only. What should be her caloric intake and number of carbs per day? Thank you Marguerite

if she is an indoor cat, she should have about 20 calories per pound of body weight as a maintenance diet. Cats have no dietary requirement for carbohydrates. Too many carbs will predispose her to obesity. Feed as low carb a diet as you can. This means choosing a canned food with a named protein source of animal, not plant, origin. It should come from the can looking like a hockey puck. Avoid foods that are minced or diced as well as foods with sauces or gravies. These diets are higher in carbs.
