My cat's eye has dark brown blotches. Is this normal or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 10 months old

A few months ago I noticed Emma's eye forming brown blotches it wasn't that noticeable so I didn't think anything of it. Now it's gotten really dark around her eye and I feel like this isn't normal. I've attached pictures one from when I first noticed and today.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Emma. I would recommend that she has her eye evaluated by her veterinarian. Hopefully it is just a normal pigment change, but cats can develop a type of cancer known as melanoma in the eye. You would want this diagnosed as soon as possible. I hope this information helps you and Emma!

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From what I can tell in the picture, this looks like normal pigmentation in the eye. As long as Keira seems comfortable with no symptoms, I would conclude that this is normal for her. Of course, if she's showing *any* signs of discomfort, increased tear production, squinting, redness, etc then I'd have her checked by your vet to be safe. Hope this helps!
