My maltipoo has diarrhea and noticeable blood in poop. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

My maltipoo has had diarrhea, loose stool and is bleeding a little when she poops. The bleeding is now more noticeable than before even though its just a few drops here and there. At around 530 yesterday afternoon we gave her half a pepto tablet. The pooping has decreases but now the little drops of blood are concerning me. How serious is the issue? This happened to my moms dog once and she turned out ok but I am very worried.

These signs may be compatible with a gastrointestinal inflammation involving the last part of the gastrointestinal system (colon). Presence of fresh blood in the feces is quite common but usually not very concerning unless other signs are present as well (lethargy and inappetence for example). As a first line approach a part from pepto tablets, I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
