Is 100mg Rimadyl twice daily too high a dose for my 48lb dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 12 years and 11 months old | 48 lbs

My dog weighs 48 lbs and my vet prescribed her 100 mg Rimadyl TWICE a day for hip dysplasia and arthritis pain. I’ve only given her one pill this evening but worried about giving another in the morning. Isn’t that twice the recommended dose for her weight? I’m concerned about toxicity. Thanks for your advice.

If Clara was 48kg, then this would be the correct dose, but you correct that this would be an overdose for a 48lb dog. I wouldn't worry too much about the dose you gave, but would recommend calling your vet to confirm the correct dosage before giving her any more. I doubt she will have any toxic effects from this dose, but if you happen to notice that she's vomiting profusely, vomiting blood, or has bloody diarrhea, then she will need to go to the vet for treatment. I hope that helps and all is well with Clara.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can’t see the other side of the label but the dose should be 1/2 tablet twice daily. Call your vet to double check if you have any further questions. Best of luck to you and Clara!
