How to tell if my cat's coughing is hairballs or feline asthma?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

My cat usually hacks up a hairball every couple weeks or so, but I read up on cat asthma and he resembles the symptoms. What is the difference between the 2- hacking up a hairball and cat asthma attacks?

The main difference is that with asthma you will never actually see any hairballs and it will be more frequent, other than that it sounds and look the same. in order to diagnose asthma an xray is usually needed.
