My dog swallowed cardboard. Is it dangerous? What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 20 lbs

My dog just swallowed a chunk of cardboard. It was a torn off piece of a Dixie paper plate, about 2" by 2.5", maybe a little bigger. She weighs 23lbs. Should I try to get her to vomit? If so, how? If I don't need to do that, should I give her anything to eat to help maybe? Also she hasn't eaten dinner yet, would it be a bad idea to feed her? And if I don't have her vomit, when will I know that it passed through her?

Cardboard is pretty digestible and I wouldn't be concerned about Ava ingesting a piece that size. I think it should be fine to feed her dinner. You may or may not be able to recognize it in her stool, but again I think it's extremely unlikely that a small amount of cardboard would cause any problem.
