How much should I feed my 6-month-old puppy to avoid overeating?

My new puppy is 6 months old and im not sure how much he should be getting fed. I’ve heard that you should let pups eat all they want until their older and then monitor how much they get. I’ve also heard they should only eat twice a day with a cup or a cup and a 1/2 of food measured out for them. What is the best way to feed him to make sure he isn’t over eating?

Gizmo is so cute!! Puppies should not be given as much food as they want, they should be given a daily allotment that is written on their bag of food. I would take his daily allotment and divide it into two equal portions for him to be fed once in the morning and once in the evening. This is the best way to feed him. How much you should feed Luna depends on the type of food you are feeding her. Each brand of food will have a different daily amount, and that will be in the instructions on the bag of food. Great question! Each food has a different daily allotment and no two foods are the same, so to know how much to feed Moose, I would check the label on his bag of food. Great question! At almost two months of age, Ooge is old enough to be fed a puppy formulated food. It has to be a puppy formulated food because puppies require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than an adult dog. A puppy food will provide everything he needs to grow properly. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. On the bag, there is a daily recommended amount of food, and I would divide that into three equal portions to feed him three times a day, once in the morning, noon, and evening. Once he turns six months old, he can be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I hope this helps :-)

Puppies will eat themselves sick if you allow it. Portion sizes for puppies are not one size fits all. Check the back of the bag of food. Manufacturers frequently provide feeding guidelines based on your puppy's age and weight. Feed 3-4 times daily then decrease as the puppy matures until you are feeding twice daily. Since he is extremely food driven, use this to your advantage when training.

Yes that is a lot of food. I suggest you feed a good brand complete puppy food for medium to large breeds (depending on how big your dog will be) and feed your puppy according to the label on the food. It should give you a daily ration and you should then feed this over three to four feeds divided. This then would be the proper amount to feed.
