Should I switch my dog and cat from Hill's Science Diet to Wellness?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 46 lbs

We currently feed our dog and cat Hill's Science Diet. However, we noticed the new Wellness brand in stores and were thinking of giving it a try. How does it compare to Hill's, and should we switch our pets to the Wellness food? I spoke with the receptionist at our vet, and she advised keeping them on Hill's. I'm just looking for a second opinion.

In my opinion, Wellness is not as good a food as Hill's Science Diet and I agree with the recommendation of your vet's office to keep your dog and cat on Hill's. Hill's has better ingredients and is overall a better quality food. In addition, the truth is that grain free food is really a fad. Only about 5% of dogs have food allergies, and of these dogs, the major of the food allergies are protein. Grain allergies are actually extremely rare, and I only recommend feeding a pet a grain free food if they have a diagnosed grain allergy. I personally recommend keeping your pets on Hill's. So what you suggest stick with wholehearted & mix with science diet wet food or changed the food to science diet.
I don't know what Science Diet formulation you are using but I would stick with that. Science Diet is an excellent company with a great reputation. All their diets are thoroughly balanced and tested. Wholehearted is grain-free and there is new evidence (scientific studies) that are showing a link between grain-free diets and heart disease in dogs. I would stay away from grain-free diets. Just my personal opinion. Best wishes.

Is science diet a high quality brand? Why do so many vets reccomend this food? Is wheat corn and soy bad for dogs? Why or why not?
Science Diet is an excellent brand of food! It's recommended by so many vets because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff who help formulate the food to make the dog's nutritional needs are met. A veterinary nutritionist is the person with the most in-depth knowledge about a dog's needs nutritionally, and many other brands of food do not have veterinary nutritionists on staff. In addition, Science Diet owns their own factories, so there is strict quality control as to what goes into their food. This is in sharp contrast to other brands, such as Blue Buffalo, who do not own their own factories and simply hand a recipe over to make their food. That's why Blue Buffalo has gotten into trouble a number of times for their lack of quality control. Finally, wheat corn and soy isn't bad for dogs. They provide a source of energy for dogs, and should be part of their diet unless there is a proven grain allergy. Grain allergies in dogs are actually extremely rare. Only 10% of all dog

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dogs. Until more is known, I recommend avoiding grain free diets. Aside from the recent association found linking these diets to heart disease, they are typically higher in carbohydrates and calories than standard diets. This leads to weight gain. I recommend diets from Hill's, Purina and Royal Canin. These are large trust worthy pet food companies. They have veterinarians on staff to research and formulate their diets. Smaller companies just do not have these resources available. I hope this information helps!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about your dog. I think Hill's Science Diet is a great food. I'm not sure why your vet would recommend a grain free food especially since with information coming out about grain free diets and an increase in dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. The FDA is investigating this link. I never recommend grain free unless the dog have a proven allergy to grains, which is very rare. I personally see no reason to switch to a grain free food but you could feed her a senior dog food for the lower calories. Hill's has an excellent senior dog food. I hope this helps!

What brand of natural dog food is high in protein but not high in price? Also should you feed your dog grain-free food? My dog is currently on Wellness Core but it is a little pricey. Can you recommend anything similar but not as expensive
I would recommend Purina Pro Plan, Hills Science Diet, or Eukanuba diets. The reason is that they all do good testing of products and have veterinarians on staff making sure the food is nutritionally balanced. There are many "boutique" food available these days that look great, but aren't ideally formulated or researched. If Sullivan is an usually active dog (hunts, does competitive agility/fly ball etc, or is a police dog), there are variations of these food for more active dogs. I do not recommend a grain free diet. This is really just a fad born out of increased awareness of gluten-free diets and celiac in people. 99.999% of the time, when dogs have food allergies it is related to an animal protein. The grain free diets are actually more likely to give dogs intestinal issues because they tend to be higher in fat. I hope you find a diet that Sullivan likes and that fits your budget!

Those are very good questions. Vets do not get paid to recommend certain brands of food. The reason that most vets like foods like Royal Canin and Science Diet is because the food companies do very detailed research about the diets. They also monitor the quality of resources closely and are very honest about what is in the diet and on the label. I do not think vets are against diets like Acana and Fromm but they typically do not have as much research to show how the food is made/put together. There are a lot of food companies out there these days and not all of them monitor the quality of the products. Dog food companies will take what humans think about humans (no wheat etc) and start marketing the dog food this way to get more people to buy the brands. I hope that helps explain it

Hello. First, Hill's Science Diet & Royal Canin are two of the most respected dog nutritional companies in the world. They have the veterinary scientists & research dollars to innovate, create & stand behind their products that are used to help fight disease & metabolic problems in our pets. If all you are interested in is basic nutrition, then all the other pet food manufacturers are more than adequate, as long as they have the AAFCO statement on their label. But if you have a pet with liver disease, kidney failure, diabetes, gastrointestinal problems or any other number of health defining issues, be very glad we have these companies looking & innovating ways to keep our pets as healthy as possible. Is grain free food ok for cats? I heard it wasn’t good for dogs. Is there a certain good that is good?
No, it's not good for cats either. Grain free is a fad, there is no science behind it at all. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I feed my cats Iams. I hope this helps!

My dog needs to lose weight, I want to make sure whatever food I switch her to, will actually help her to lose some pounds. I'm torn between science diet perfect weight & earthborn weight control? Which would be a better fit for weight loss?
The science diet perfect weight is a very high quality food. I personally would prefer this food over the other one as I am not so fond of grain free foods. Also the label "holistic" really means nothing. With the science diet you have solid research behind the formulation and know that your dog will not lack any nutrients. Make sure that Cali also gets enough exercise to help with losing weight.

Is wellness complete health deboned and oatmeal dog food healthy for a dog ? Would you recommend it?
Wellness is an excellent choice for a dog food. If Willow eats it, does well on it and it is easy for you to buy, then by all means continue feeding it. I have fed this diet to my pets in the past. (I can't feed it currently because my dog is allergic to peas). This is my own opinion unrelated to Petco or Boop by Petco.
