What homemade food can help my thin German Shepherd gain weight?

Feed her a good quality puppy food for German Shepherd dogs. Feed her several times daily, small amounts at a time and more often. Warm up her food, it may make it more attractive. If she still does not gain weight have your vet check her for exocrine pancreas insufficiency. Maybe your vet can recommend a good food for her to gain weight.

Hello, you can supplement her feed with additional protein sources such as chicken or turkey. You can also provide beef. Alternatively, you may change her feed to something else which she may like better, either different protein source or different carbohydrate source. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It's very hard to get a balanced homemade diet, and just giving Salt chicken, rice, and veg will not be fully balanced for her. If you want to do a homemade diet to help her lose weight, I will put a link to two websites below that give recipes for homemade diets for dogs. They are recipes provided by veterinary nutritionists, so they will be balanced nutritionally for her. In terms of her losing weight, you don't want it to happen quickly, it should be slowly over time. Dogs can vary quite a bit in size, even if they are the same breed - so it's more important to look at your dog's body condition to determine if he is under (or over) his ideal weight rather than comparing to averages for the breed. Ideally, you should be able to feel his ribs easily with your hands when you run them down his sides, and he should have a visible "waistline" or abdominal tuck just behind the ribcage. The ribs and hipbones should not be visibly jutting out of his fur, as this would be a sign that he is too thin. If his body condition is normal, I would not recommend increasing his food or trying to make him gain weight, as it's not good for growing dogs to be overweight at this age - it's very hard on their joints and can predispose them to orthopedic problems such as hip dysplasia later in life. German Shepherds are lanky dogs, especially when they are puppies. Make sure you are feeding him enough and that he is dewormed regularly. If Boe is still abnormaly thin as an adult, then I would worry about something else going on. I would recommend to feed the Royal Canin German Shepherd Puppy Formula. I can give you a couple of websites that have recipes for homemade diets. It's very difficult to get the correct balance of nutrients in a homemade diets, and these websites will help with that. One of the sites is from the UC Davis veterinary school, and the recipes are provided by experts in animal nutrition. I would use recipes from these sites to feed your dog. Hi Gwennie! Great question! Yes, homemade diets can be fed, provided that they are properly balanced. Balancing diets can be a very tricky balance of obtaining the correct amounts of vitamins and minerals. If you choose to cook for your new dog, be sure to use a recipe and supplements from a reputable source, such as www.balanceit.com, which was developed by the veterinary nutritionists at the UC-Davis vet school. If you will be adopting a puppy, I would consider feeding a commercially available puppy food for the first year of life because it is nearly impossible to properly formulate a home-cooked diet for growth.
