Why is my dog's nose raw after being lost in the woods and creeks?

My dog went missing for 24 hrs. We live in the coutry with creeks and woods. Anyway... With in 12 hrs we noticed red raw looking skin under his nose. Could it be from trying to find his way home? Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 39 lbs
