My puppy met a sick rat. Should I worry about a bite without marks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 12 days old | 11 lbs

My 6 month old cocker spaniel has just been in the garden and there was a large Rat on the lawn. It wasn’t moving very much and I don’t know if it had bite my dog before I got rid of it. I can’t see any puncture marks or blood. What should I do?

If you checked Bella well and you cannot find any bite marks, then I would not worry as it is likely that she did not get bitten. A slow moving rat that does not run away is likely a sick or possibly poisoned rat. You may want to ask around your neighbors who is using rat poison and which one, just in case another poisoned rat strays on your lawn and Bella happens to eat it before you can dispatch it.
