My puppy pees a lot, struggles to poop. Could it be a UTI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 2 days old | 8 lbs

My puppy was 2 days late on getting her 8 week deworm medicine, but is showing no signs of worms, however she is peeing alot more frequently and sometimes very little if nothing, and seems to be having a hard time pooping. I gave her some cranberry juice hoping to help a uti, is there anything else it could be? Or anyother way to organically assist in this process besides going to a vet?

Missing the dewormer dose by just a couple of days would not cause any of the symptoms you are describing in Penny. I would go ahead and give her the repeat dose as soon as possible. As far as the urinary issues are concerned, Penny either has a urinary tract infection or is just going through a phase in her potty training where she is going more frequently. If she is posturing to urinate and nothing comes out or if you are noticing blood in the urine, a uti is much more likely. I would recommend at least taking a sample of Penny’s urine in to be examined by your veterinarian tinrule out an infection. If she does have an infection she will need to be on antibiotics for about 2 weeks to clear it up. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.

Hello. This could just be a normal reaction to a new situation for Penny. Her whole world has changed, & she just needs time to adjust. Just to be sure, please have her examined by your veterinarian in the next day or so. Stress can lower the immune system, & just make Penny feel lousy, & if she is incubating something, an infection or parasites, getting to things quickly will make sure she becomes a healthy, happy, bouncy puppy. Take care.
