Why is my dog fighting new blind housemates after living with others?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cairn Terrier | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

Hello. My dog Charlie has lived with another dog and two cats for years! We recently moved in with two other older female dogs. These dogs are almost blind and just tend to lay down and relax or hover. Within the past few days Charlie has fought with one of the older dogs. He has gone after this dog three times but then will relax and lay with her later in the day. Can you tell me whats going on

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly not all dogs get along, just like all people do not get along. I wonder if the medical conditions of the other dogs are throwing Charles off. They may not act like dogs he is used too since they can't see and their behavior is different. The hovering behavior may cause jealousy on his part as he is used to being the only dog and getting all the attention/resources. Since the other dogs are elderly and mostly blind you really have to prevent injury to these dogs from Charles. Prevent special treatment to all dogs, all should be treated equally. Begging and hovering should be discouraged when high value foods, treats or toys are used. If things get bad then Charles can't be around the dogs during moments that are known to trigger him attacking the other dogs. I hope this helps and I wish you all the very best!
