My dog isn't drinking water tonight. When to worry about dehydration?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 4 months and 7 days old | 5.95 lbs

My yorkie doesn't want to drink water tonight. She has been drinking plenty every day, today as well but none tonight. She is otherwise eating and playing constantly. How long before I need to worry/do something? Thanks.

I would not be too worried about Bailey just yet. It's ok that she doesn't want to drink water tonight, especially since she drank plenty during the day. She simply may not be thirsty. I would start getting concerned if she doesn't drink any water tomorrow, and if 12-24 hours pass without her drinking water, I would recommend making an appointment with the vet. I hope this helps!

Hi there. If Star is acting normal otherwise, I wouldn't be concerned - there aren't really any illnesses that cause decreased water intake as an isolated symptom, so it's likely that he just isn't very thirsty right now. The weather may have been cooler today than it has been, or he may not have exercised as much for some reason.

This depends on a lot of factors including if she is otherwise exhibiting any symptoms of sickness, if she is eating canned food which already has water in it, how much water she is actually having, among other things. If she is not drinking anything especially if having other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and/or lethargy, she should be evaluated as soon as possible to prevent dehydration and to investigate the cause. If she is otherwise doing well and is eating canned food, it would be ok to monitor her for another 12-24 hours and if not improved to have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. Hopefully she returns to normal and there is no need for a veterinary visit. Have a great day!

What happens to dogs if they do not get enough water? Is it correct to prevent the dog drinking water at night, especially dogs living within residential buildings? I would like to answer in a scientific way with great thanks and respect
Your pet can become dehydrated if they don't get enough water, which over time can cause damage to their kidneys. The kidneys need constant water in order to function well, so when the body is depleted of water, they have to work overtime to concentrate the urine, and this eventually can damage the internal structures of the kidneys. Taking up water at night isn't enough to cause a pet to become dehydrated enough to cause concern for pet owners. My dog is not eating but he's drinking water and is alert. What's wrong?
An adult dog that has no other medical conditions can usually go for 12-24 hours without eating as long as he is still drinking water and is alert. He may just have a bit of an [upset stomach](https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-treat-your-dogs-upset-stomach) from something he ate (that he wasn't supposed to) or he could have a touch of gastrointestinal infection. Continue to monitor him. New Pet
We have an 11 week old puppy, she has been eating pretty well up until today. She is eating very little here and there but she is also drinking water every chance she gets. Is this something I should be concerned about?
It could just be an off day for Kira, and she may have an upset stomach. Given that she is eating a little bit and still drinking water, I'd keep an eye on her for now. If she stops eating altogether, she keeps eating very little for the next 24 hours, she stops drinking water, she becomes lethargic, or she develops other signs such as vomiting and diarrhea, I would take her into the vet. My dog went under anesthesia for teeth cleaning and dental work. She also had a small tumor removed from her eyelid area. Molly is an otherwise almost 8 year old healthy lab. The operation was 4 days ago. Her appetite is good but she refuses to drink
She may not have a drive to drink if she received iv fluids during her procedures and you are meeting what she needs through her diet. If she is otherwise happy with normal appetite and energy level and no vomiting or diarrhea you can continue monitoring. If any of these change in addition to not drinking then that would be more concerning as dehydration could ensue. I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

Our dog only has water in the evening. He does not have water at night after we take him out and he does not have water in the morning or during the day while we are at work. is this wrong?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is not necessarily wrong if he is otherwise doing fine. Dogs like humans rely on thirst and usually will drink when thirsty so I would not worry about this too much. If he eats a wet food, that may be another reason why he does not drink as much water. IF she needs water and becomes thirsty she will drink, do not worry about that just leave several bowls of water, i usually even leave a large salad bowl filled with water when i leave for more than 24 hours.

How do I get my dog to drink water when she wont? she is very dehydrated.
If Biscuit is not drinking enough and is very dehydrated, she will need to be seen by an emergency veterinarian. There is no way that you can make her drink. You can try spooning some water into her, however, considering she is dehydrated, you cannot put enough fluid into her that way. Also being dehydrated is usually a sign of being ill, and that needs to be investigated as well. The vet will either give fluids under the skin to rehydrate or she may need intravenous fluids, if her condition is severe.

It could be that she is just exhausted from playing in the sea all day, or she could have drank too much sea water upsetting her stomach. If you are concerned that she looks really ill, then it's fine to have her seen by a vet right away. Otherwise, allow her to sleep, and make sure to leave water out at all times for her. When she's ready to drink, she will have some water. Sleeping for two to three hours isn't much, I'd be more concerned if she was sleeping all day long. If she still isn't drinking water in the morning and still seems ill, you can bring her into the vet for a health check.
