My puppy has a green gunk wound from a fight. Is salt water enough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 18 days old | 50 lbs

We have two Rottweiler x puppies and they have had a fight two days agom One on the dogs has a surface wound on his back which was not noticeable right away but it has now got a light green gunk in his fur and he wont let us touch it too much. We have used an antiseptic spray and have also been advised to wash with salt water. His appetite is normal and his behaviour is pretty much the same, he just seems to be in pain . Should these salt washes be enough to prevent further infection?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Muddy! If there is green discharge that likely means it is infected. If he will not let you touch it and is painful it is best to see a Vet. It is best to shave all the fur away so the wound can be evaluated and wounds tend to heal faster when exposed to air. Also topicals work better when they are placed directly on the wound. The Vet can muzzle or sedate him if he is too painful. Please do not get bitten. He likely needs pain medications and antibiotics. Also, if he is able to reach it and lick it he will need an E-collar or should wear a T-shirt. I hope this helps and I wish Muddy the very best!
