My cat's leg is swollen and pussing after injury. Is it infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed

So my cat is at the vet now. It's been 4 days. I found her laying limp. Back hindleg swollen. I would guess she fell at some point through the night. The vet isn't sure what happened xray showed no broken bones. She's been on antibiotics and today (day 4) swelling has gone down but now the small wound is pussing. The vet says there is internal injury. What is going on with my kitty!?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. From your description it sounds as though Teva sustained this injury from trauma. It is tough to say when the initial injury was not seen by anyone. It sounds as though the wound is infected and Teva being on antibiotics is good so that it resolves. If it does not resolve, I would recommend culturing the wound to see if there are any resistant bacteria that need to be addressed. I hope Teva makes a speedy recovery! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
