My adult dog eats puppy food. Is it safe or will he gain weight?

We have a goldendoodle puppy, We are feeding her merrick puppy food, our 12 year old toy poodle wants to eat the puppy food instead of his, I was told the puppy food would put on too much weight, what do you suggest. Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 22 days old | 18 lbs
