Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | 5 months and 4 days old
My dog got a hold of one of our ferrets tonight from our beat efforts to keep them apart always. The ferret was in shock for a while but is now playing and acting ok but we noticed he is acting less energetic and has a dark red/black spot the size of the quarter on his lower abdomen. It is somewhat swollen as well. Is this possibly just bruising or more serious? What do we need to keep an eye on tonight? And what is the best course of action besides emergency vet if possible?

I am so sorry to hear this. I’m sure you are worried about Loki. Anytime there is a possible bite wound to the abdomen such as this there is high risk of damage to the internal organs. There does not have to be a puncture to cause damage. Unfortunately there is no way to know without an exploratory surgery to look at the intestines. Usually there are no initial signs until a few days later when the tissue starts to necrose and the patient becomes septic. Certainly there is always a possibility that the damage is only skin deep, but there is such a high risk if it is not. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope he does well. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
